Volunteers and volunteer groups are the glue of our community

It has been a couple years since the release of the Kanata-Carleton Community Volunteer Initiative – an attempt to raise awareness about the benefits of volunteerism and to promote the many opportunities in our community for individuals to volunteer.

In my meetings, at public events and in media I find ways to promote volunteerism. Through a series of roundtable discussions with Kanata and West Carleton community groups and volunteer organizations I also hope to provide support and help strengthen the volunteer network in our community.

On June 23, I hosted a Community Volunteer Roundtable Discussion for local groups to share ideas on their summer plans to reconnect with volunteers and re-engage in community activities. This was the third roundtable held in the last 18 months.

A total of 13 participants joined me and our session facilitator to discuss how local groups are pivoting to provide services post-pandemic. It was recognized that this summer will be very important for volunteer groups and our community. For individuals who volunteer, their actions will ensure a healthy re-engagement in daily activities and with fellow residents. It is anticipated that through increased volunteer activities, both individual residents and the community will be able to transition from this past year to the new normal.

We live in a wonderful community and I believe it is so because of our community-minded residents, many of whom are volunteers in our neighbourhood associations and groups. Let me take this space to thank all volunteers for the important roles you are playing in making our community better.

Buy Local and support our business community

For residents of Kanata and West Carleton I ask that through the summer months please think first to shop for goods and services from local businesses. If you are now ordering online, please consider making those purchases from local retailers.

I am currently promoting a “Buy Local” campaign and working closely with business leaders at the Kanata Central BIA, Kanata North BA, Carp Road BIA, Carp BIA as well as the Ottawa Board of Trade to coordinate efforts in support of our local business community.

This is one planned activity from the Kanata-Carleton High Tech and Business Initiative, an economic development plan for Kanata and West Carleton.
